HACIENDA CORONA DE GUEVAVI ♣
In
1956 the Guevavi Ranch was purchased by legendary rancher Ralph Wingfield who gradually expanded it to nearly 100,000 acres; thereby making it one of Arizona's largest working ranches. Frequented by family friend (& business partner) John Wayne, among other Hollywood gliteratti:
Elizabeth Taylor, Ward Bond, Stephanie Powers & Stewart
Granger, it became a hub for
ranching activity & parties during the movie-making 1950's. Some years before the purchase, Wingfield had supplied cattle and cowboys for the making of Wayne's film, Red River, filmed just outside
of Sonoita. It was the beginning of a lifelong friendship.
The documented history of this area; however, reaches
much further back, to the early 1700's, when
Basque explorer Juan Bautista de Anza established it as Guevavi Mission ranchland. The Guevavi Ranch is
named for the nearby Guevavi Mission, first established by
Father Eusebio Kino in 1691.
The Guevavi Mission was the first mission established in what
was to become the United States.
